On Dec. 4, Air Force Capt. Kermit Evans Sr., a 31-year-old Mississippi State alumnus, was killed when his helicopter made an emergency water landing in Iraq. He is the first alumnus or MSU student to lose his life in the war. The Hollandale native, one of four soldiers killed, drowned when passengers from the U.S. Marine Corps CH-46 helicopter were evacuated on a lake in western Al Anbar Province. (5) comments

The Starkville Police Department is cracking down on DUIs and underage drinking in 2007. After receiving a $35,000 grant from the Mississippi Department of Public Safety, the SPD plans to use the money to enforce DUI and other alcohol related offenses. (0) comments
Policy will require freshmen to live on campus
Meal plans will also be mandatory beginning fall semester of 2008

The university's policy on freshmen housing and meal plans will change as of the fall semester of 2008. Entering freshmen will be required to live in on-campus housing and buy meal plans. MSU administrators decided to change the policy because they believe the change will increase the quality of life of freshmen students, vice president of student affairs Bill Kibler said.
