Flick: an MSU legend
Abstract:
Walking into Hank Flick's office in McComas Hall, a visitor immediately sees the history and tradition Flick has been associated with in his 32 years of service to Mississippi State University. Pictures of iconic coaches and players line his wall and desk along with photographs of his son....

You must be kidding. Hank Flick is like the Chick Hearn or Dick Vitale of MSU; he's an icon and MSU athletics made a shitty decision.

If Hank Flick was the reason you quit going to games, you were probably there for the wrong reason and shouldn't have been there. He was just an announcer and hardly affected my watching a football game. I was there to watch the team play. I agree his voice didn't fit at football games but I will definitely miss the personality he brought to the Hump. Rumble voiced United Center guys are a dime a dozen. MSU should avoid the yelling present at most SEC games!

If the reason you quit going to MSU football games was because of Hank Flick, then you have got to be the only one. That is definitely lousy fan support. You rarely even hear Flick other than to say, "2nd Down and 10." On the other hand, Flick speaks throughout the basketball games, typically every 30 seconds of game play (barring scoring droughts with no fouls).

"Fingernails on a chalkboard". For years I figured I was the only one who described his voice like that.

Hank Flick is a great announcer!!! I looked forward to any game that he was an announcer. As an alum, I feel that his dismissal of announcing duties is almost a tragedy. I attended the Spring Scrimage expecting to hear his voice over the new Jumbotron and sound system. I hope that the announcer who performed Flick's duties is not the new voice of the bulldogs!!! He could not even give a correct score and seemed very scattered in his announcing. BRING BACK HANK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Certainly it is the athletic department's right to make the changes they feel will be benefical, but the abrupt text-message announcement of "moving in another direction" was disrespectful to say the least. Forming new traditions is great, but you don't step on the toes of those who have helped form the aura of a university and disrespect a man who has served the university and the athletic department for decades. Geez, could a respectful and praiseful news release not have been put out ahead of time? Very typical. Is Jack Cristil next?!?

Dismissing Hank Flick is the most stupid decision M.S.U. has made recently. The college as a whole makes decisions regarding sporting events that inconvenience students, make us angry and/or slightly annoyed (completely unnecessary and unannounced closing of NW commuter lot during Super Bulldog Weekend being a prime example). But this is going too far. Thanks to the athletic department for following a disappointing football season with a big middle finger to the student body. And to think, we were just getting excited about our new coach...

Will it take Coach Stansbury getting fired to realize that maybe Greg Byrne isn't the right choice for Mississippi State?
Because once Stanz goes, the "Ninja" will have replaced all three of the most profitable programs' coaches.
And then where will we be?
It's one thing to witness a four-star general on a power trip. It's quite another when that same spirit is embodied in a young athletic director who has insecurities and feels he always has to prove himself by changing something.
Change just for the sake of change? Not a good thing.
(See Daffodil-gate, random painting of fire hydrants, and massive purchase of identical signs, only to have the style change with a new school logo that makes those $100,000+ signs obsolete.)

Greg Byrne is a good choice for MSU, remember he did not replace the "Tyrant" Polk, he left when his protector Templeton was headed out the door. Byrne did not bow down to King Polk and hire who Polk wanted.
He handled that situation fine.
With the firing of Croom I don't think that even needs any further discussion, a change, right or wrong, was defintely needed for that program.
As for as Dr. Flick is concerned I have traveled to most of the stadiums around the SEC and have always felt that he was one of the best announcers, however I have noticed over the past couple of years he has lost a little bit of his edge, (could have had something to do with what he was watching on the field). His basketball games, the few I got to attend, were adequate. There is never a good way to replace someone that has been there as many years as Dr. Flick, change is not always easy. I think that Bryne is trying to get MSU out of the mediocore phase into a national contender. I know the announcer has nothing to do with that part but while you are changing why not. MSU could still honor Dr. Flick and allow the fans to say goodbye.

Seven years ago, I remember first hearing Flick at an honors forum shortly before the basketball season started. I remember how much his voiced annoyed most everyone and did sound like "fingernails on a chalkboard." When I went to my first MSU game, I was dismayed to find out he was the announcer. He lacked creativity and was not engaging to the crowd. Only the style of our play and Rick's Rowdies keep things interesting. It's about time he was replaced so that we can get an SEC worthy announcer.
That is what we need

That is exactly what we need Jerry Lawler announcing are games. Or some other in your face yahoo with "personality". Why not Howard Stern or Bubba the Love Sponge?
When did class and professionalism go out of style?
Why not just ask Flick to get into it more? Or cut him back to basketball? It is clearly the announcer's fault that Mississippi State football has been lackluster.
Give me a break. You fire some one for 32 years of loyal service to the university. What is he a pre-madonna and asked for only green M&Ms and his own private rehearsal trailer. I doubt it.
Oh and ballsy move doing it right before school lets out and so far before Football and Basketball season.

My thoughts: (1) If you want to get rid of someone who has been doing what he does as long as Hank Flick has, you need to handle it much better than this; (2) while I've never really thought Hank was that great a football announcer, I actually did like him as a basketball announcer and wish they were keeping him for that, at least.

AS a loyal fan for 40 years I was not only disappointed but shocked by Hank's removal. I have always looked forward to his enthusiastic and entertaining announcing. To make things worse, the way it was done demonstrates NO CLASS no matter who pulled the trigger. Right on Richard. LA is not a true fan. He must have been run off by the Rebs.

While Flick has represented the university well in his 32 years, 32 years on the job does not guarantee anyone a lifetime appointment. The athletic department, who chooses and hires the announcer, decided it was time to move on. Should they have made last February and March his swan song? Yes, but do we know if Flick wanted that? No. The athletic department had a decision to make under new AD Greg Byrne and they made it. So far, Byrne has improved fundraising and Bulldog Club support; replaced Croom as needed after 5 seasons to make what most college football analysts said to be the best post-season college football hire (Dan Mullen) in the country; replaced the beloved and great Polk who was past his time with a great young coach (John Cohen) with a history of winning as a head coach (at Kentucky where baseball gets no attention) and who was a former Bulldog player and assistant; built the college football jumbo tron (2nd largest megatron in the country); built a new and larger baseball scoreboard and HD video screen; signed Stansbury to a raise and extension. That is 6 top-notch things in less than 16 months.
Hence, if Byrne wants to move in a new direction for the radio and court-side announcers, I am all for it. Jim Ellis will clearly stay in baseball, football (color), and basketball (color) but it is time for Jack Cristil and Hank Flick to move on and thank them and remember them for their service. But lifetime appointments to the job should definitely not be in the cards.

I'm sorry, but I think a bunch of y'all (as well as the editorial board) are seeing this whole deal through maroon-colored glasses. Yes, I'm sure Hank Flick is a good man, and has served the university and the athletic department exceptionally devotedly and with class for more than thirty years, and that's very commendable and deserves nothing but the best; but I don't know of any people not diehard State fans that say he sounds good as an announcer. Repeatedly I've heard fans of other schools who've been to State football and basketball games say he has one of the most annoying voices they've ever heard and that they couldn't imagine having to listen to him for a whole football and/or basketball season and don't know how State fans put up with the sound of his voice. Please understand I'm not knocking the man personally, like I said he's served the university and athletic department with nothing but the best of dedication and class and I hope the university finds some nice way to honor him for his long years of service; but again, I've never heard a non-State fan say he sounds good as a PA announcer (and even some State fans say he doesn't as evidenced by this board) and sounding good is in essence what a PA job is about.

Hank Flick will always be one of the best traditions of Mississippi State University athletics. As I do not know the entire story by any means, I also do not understand why his position was taken from him. Hank will be missed greatly at the games and I for one will be greatly saddened to hear another voice over the loudspeakers at the games.
I sure hope for Byrne's sake that whoever they replace Hank with is the best thing since sliced bread. There are a lot of unhappy alumni whose money runs a lot of the athletics at our great university.
Gotta love some of the wonderful decisions that go through MSU!
We will miss you Hank. See you in class.

I believe this was a very bad move. Traditions are traditions and Hank Flick was is a tradition in which should still be carried on. What if the athletic department decides no more cowbells at games(and I seriously mean no more cowbells as in taking them up and kicking anyone saw with one banned from games??) Well I for one would be mad, the cowbell,is a tradition which makes up MSU Spirit much like Bully and Hank Flick.... THIS IS A RIDICULOUS MOVE!!!

Hank Flick is to be credited for helping many successful students in broadcasting find jobs over the years. His interviewing class should be a required for all graduating classes no matter the degree. You should not be able to graduate from any college or School on Mississippi State's campus without taking Hank Flick's interviewing class. I have never had a job interview that was as tough as Hank Flick's class. I have never had an on air interview that was as tough as Dr. Flick's class...As an Emmy award winning journalist, I can honestly say, I would not have had the successes I've had without Dr. Flick's inspiration and help. To remove him from the broadcast atmosphere of our game days is nothing short of callous and disrespectful. Maybe if we could actually play ball our athletic department wouldn't be worried with such nonsense. For all I care you can plant daisies and dance in them at Scott Field because I am done with Bulldog sporting events... Tradition and heart should count for something win or lose... Hank Flick is and always will be a winner in my opinion.
While being a loser in Athletics stinks, being a loser without Flick's voice will stink even more without Hank Flick as a tradition.
The only annoying thing about Dr. Flick was the fact that he wasn't given a chance to announce more winning games....
