Abstract:
After 131 years, MSU won its first national championship Sunday. Surprisingly, it was not football, baseball, basketball or any of the usual suspects, but disc golf....

Too bad Jack Cristil wasn't there to "wrap it in Maroon & White!" Congrats to all Disc Golf team members!

Not to dilute what the MSU disc golf team has done by any means, but I would like to point out that MSU has actually won a national championship in doubles men's tennis before...so this isn't actually the first and only time an MSU athletic team has won a national title.

Congrats to the disc golf team nonetheless. Big accomplishment, and it's nice to see the Maroon and White at the top of something.

The disk golf fiasco is the first time a Mississippi State team has ever won a national title in any sport, plain and simple. Neither MSU men's or women's tennis has ever won a national championship.
Men's doubles, yes... in 1994, but the actual MSU men's tennis team ended up finishing third behind Southern Cal and Stanford.
As a matter of fact, the duo that won the doubles tournament in '94 lost to Virginia's doubles squad in the NCAA "team" tournament.
Only after the defeat did the MSU doubles team enter the (separate) doubles tournament where the MSU duo defeated Virginia in a rematch, propelling them to an eventual doubles tournament victory - a far less esteemed accomplishment than an outright national team title.
No denying, this doubles tourney victory is certainly an accomplishment for MSU sports; but all-in-all, this victory represents two individuals' stellar play far more than it does a national title.
In reality, the '94 doubles team is part of the reason we failed to capture the NCAA Tennis Championship crown more than a decade ago.
Still, kudos to Laurent Miquelard and Joc Simmons for rebounding from a tough loss to go on and win the doubles tournament.
Congrats to the disk golf team. I'm glade Jack is around to see it.

Of course, congrats to these guys for their championship.

Seriously though, the writer of this article is going to compare this 18-team disc golf championship, which is a club sport, to the official sports of the NCAA? I'm sorry, but as far as I am concerned, MSU has yet to produce a national champion to put an end to the drought that is 131 years long.

I did know about the Tennis doubles title, Joey. Haha, thanks for popping the bubble, sir. For the next national title, you can clarify that one. :)

Brad, when you win a national championship in something, let me know. Also, how many teams did Vanderbilt women's bowling compete against to earn it's first national championship? Numbers I found on division I women's bowling placed the number at 29 total in the nation. Amount of competition in an emerging sport does not bear any significance in the relevance of its national champion. Club or varsity sport, a team winning a national championship in any sport is worth calling it a national championship. Winning students deserve to be printed in a student paper.

No, no Eliot... Stand by your article.

I have remained behind my story. I am mostly joking around with Joey, who is a friend. MSU only has one athletic team national title, disc golf. Tennis has Miquelard and Simmons as champions for doubles. Thank Andy Jackson for that one.

Congrats to the dawgs! I just took up the sport out here in Pocatello, ID and love it! There is an incredibly challenging course at Idaho State University and as an MSU alum I would love to see the team come out here and play!

Go MSU
