Daffodil affair raises questions
Abstract:
I have gotten quite a lot of e-mails about daffodils being killed on Mississippi State University's main campus, including e-mails from students, faculty, graduates and employees afraid to speak publicly because of job security concerns. The relatively minor hubbub would be comical if it weren't indicative of a deeper issue....

i didn't care too much about the flowers but the murdering of the crape myrtles put me over the top. they were a vital part of our beautiful baseball stadium. the same stadium that i saw when visiting campus and said to my dad "this is where i wanna be." he micromanages to the extreme. he has to have everything his way. he has to interject his voice into every little issue regardless of how big or small that issue may be. and then, when he is held accountable, he spouts off some whiny, childish or arrogant mess. he can't admit when he makes mistakes. i feel his heart is in the right place and i admire him for that but he has experience being a general, not running an institution of higher learning. he will be a major obstacle to the success of MSU.

There will never again be a prospect to look up into their flowering overhang as he awaits his opportunity to enter the "stadium that Ron built" and cheer on his Bulldogs. They will never again provide just a touch of shade for couples that have walked year after year together across this campus to share their love of the game. The daffodils that were missed are stubbornly trying to bring one last glimmer of hope to that now raped hillside. I guess Doc is going to get his wish and the over 5000 boosters who pay for baseball season tickets, will most likely be welcomed to the first home game tomorrow by a large empty brown hill.

The campus has never looked better than it looks now. Doc is not micro-managing. He is getting into the micro-details. Any good leader gets into the micro-details.
Doc is a leader we have lacked at MSU for a long time. For far too long, much of the staff and faculty at State have had the mindset of a typical federal or state employee....doing the bare minimum to get by. Doc is holding people accountable, and this upsets the people who need to get their act together.
All of this daffodil controversy is a mere smokescreen for the cowards to hide behind and criticize Doc. Those who live in the past can never progress into the future.

Keep up the good work Doc!!! If Felder Rushing's yard is an indication of "naturalistic ebb and flow", I don't want it near MSU's beautiful campus. Do we really want to take aesthetic advice from a man whose yard could at best be described as unkempt? Felder, while well qualified to comment on matters of the plant variety, has a very different view of what is visually pleasing than do 90% of the rest of us (go take a look at his yard...he's a neighbor's worst nightmare). Campus looks better than it ever has. Doc is doing a GREAT job. The only people that don't like him are the lazy University employees (not all of them, just the lazy ones) and their ilk.

I disagree with you Mr. Cooley. I AM NOT lazy and I do not have the mentality of a Federal/State government employee. You have cited a very few on this campus. I will add my comment on the daffodil controversy. Blooming daffodils, or any springtime flower/foliage always brings a new sense of hope and well being to me. Since I am pretty much an average woman, I would venture to say that your opinion of the percentage of residents of this campus, city, county and those surrounding, who agree with the landscape changes being made, is grossly overstated! What is wrong with the landscape changes that happen through the natural process of living things?

It sure is pretty. Too bad it's not worth a shit.
Seriously, how about some substance to this University? It's never going to be pretty like Ole Miss, or like the Ivy League Schools. We can at least try to be intelligent, can't we? (Like by hiring someone who knows how to lead a university, not someone who knows how to fly a plane...)

Congratulations to all of Doc and all of his cheerleaders. It's wonderfully informed, insightful individuals like yourself that allow us to have such great freedom of thought and expression. Some of the people like you work on the IHL board and can find MSU such a diamond in the rough like Doc.
I say let's pave over every last greenspace on the campus, at least it would look uniform. It's not enough that we've adopted the Air Force slogan, the Air Force's (and many other millitary academies') honor code....what we need is UNIFORMS!!! Beautiful maroon and white uniforms, trimmed in gold braid. A rank structure too...better yet...when Ole Miss comes over to State we'll just kill them...just cause they're different.
I mean Doc only has our best interests at heart. I've got proof....he spent half a million dollars on so many great signs so everyone can find their way to class in the morning! That is care...! He even flies the university airplane over football games to ward off any would be attackers. None of this is JUST because Doc wants it...it's all for us. Can't you see? Let's knock down Steven Lee's bust on the Drill Field and post one of Doc so his unwavering gaze can cast over campus for the rest of eternity!!
Let Doc run roughshod over every last tradition we have...Perhaps mosquitoes are breeding in Eckie's Pond? Nuke the bastards....damn up the pond...build a parking lot. The twin towers are too tall and they block the view from El Presidente's house...burn it to the ground. I'm done....
Oh, Doc, Cuba is needing a new dictator (Dick-tater) maybe someone with your "cult of personality" building skills should fit in well. Your 33 years in the friggin Air Force pails in comparison to our school's 130...Guess what our parents, grandparents, brothers and sisters were here first, so back the hell off. Don't like that? Go to damn ranch in Montana and burn all the damn flowers you like...oh....and take your damn cronies with you.

It is no about the daffodils, it goes much, much deeper than that. It is about his lying, his micro-managing, his priorities, and his my way or the highway attitude. You know he had a delivery (from a major delivery company...think UPS and FedEx) truck towed because he didn't like the fact they parked on the concrete so that they were not blocking the road. He also wants nothing to do with learning about MSU's many research facilities and the work they do, but is lightning fast to throw out the names of research facilities and dollar figures when one procures a large grant or wins a national competition, even though he's never set foot into the facility to learn what they do or take a tour.
Even if it were just about the flowers, he has said in emails to students and I quote "If we are going to have flower beds, we are going to have robust flower beds." The only real "Flowers" I have seen in any beds lately are pansies, not the robust of flowers if you ask me. most of the beds have has the flowers uprooted for bushes. Maybe brown bushes, and brown paint are pleasing to Doc, but not to me. I want color, beauty, nature, height variations in my landscaping. I want to relish in beauty while I study, not walk across a dull brown, and green landscape.
Personally, I'd like to see more more online and correspondence classes, and childcare discounts for the on campus child care facilities, than a sign, dug up flower bed, or new paint.

First... what do you have against vaginas?
Second... where are you getting "liberal"? You've gotten a bit too obsessed in dittohead politics, and are seeing your personal demons everywhere. I'm no tree-hugger. I don't really care all that much about daffodils, daisies, pansies, or pandas; this whole shmear is just yet another symbol of Doc's bizarre wackiness. I'm tired of the astoundingly-vain Generalissimo putting up shrines to himself (I see the velvet-Elvis painting finally came down in the library, but I'm waiting for a gold Saddam-like statue to pop up any day), I'm tired of him throwing embarrassing public tantrums (like a dumped teenage girl on MySpace) on the MSU website for the rest of the country to see, and I'm tired of him wasting money on self-centered backyard billboards, brown paint, flower-removal, and $five-figure$ fly-overs when we're looking at some major budget cuts this year, all because the only part of his job he's interested in doing is prettifying his damn jogging route.
Oh, and his mindless bootlickers are getting kind of old, too. And that's where you come in, toadie. Hop along, now.

In case you're too dense to figure it out, the issue isn't specifically about daffodils, flowers, or even landscaping. These items just "raised questions" about the administration that have been raised many times before.
Doc is the one who made the Daffodil fiasco a fiasco - he is the one who wrote rude replies to students (who are, by the way, the customer in a University environment, lest we forget). His "reign" is why faculty and staff are afraid to speak out, anyone who crosses him seems to be burned at the stake these days. The issue, Dennis, is that the President's approval rating seems to be about as high as GW Bush.

Felder's article is dead on; it's good to see a little piece of the real issue printed.
To the people that think it is lazy faculty/staff complaining : Just try to keep up with the landscape & other FM workers for a week. They spend the majority of their time attempting to keep up with the weekly, 2-3 page list of Doc's special jobs he wants completed AND work requested from customers on campus...guess which gets top priority! It's sickening to see the money & man-power that is spent on special projects when there are so many other real maintenance needs. But what's worse is MSU leadership has almost completely lost the trust of its faculty/staff/students. If we can't get a straight, truthful answer about something as simple & direct as "Did you want all daffoldils gone?", we can't expect straight truthful answers on real issues.

I wonder why Foglesong didn't have the five million new posts painted brown as well? Or is that being saved for an excuse to spend more money on aesthetic (*gag*) projects later on?
If you'd like another example of his reckless full-steam-ahead attitude, sit back and read this:
Roughly around the same time the bike racks were being installed, Giles Hall reported a pipe burst under an outdoor stair. Rather than consulting the group of architects about possible solutions before contracting the repair job (they later said it would be entirely feasible to dig under the staircase to fix the problem), he ordered the entire staircase to be demolished. Here's the kicker: the dean of the school wasn't aware this decision had been made until he heard jackhammering one morning. Later on, he had a handrail installed in the middle of the reconstructed staircase, which had originally been designed to be extra wide to accommodate students as they carried large projects and building materials up and down.

Maybe it's time for Fogelsong to buy a plane ticket to Cuba. There's a job opening there that sounds like it should suit him just fine!
All you alumni who constantly pop up on every article even mildly critical of Foglesong going "Doc is a true leader, hurr hurr"...when was the last time you were on campus other than for a football game or other sporting event? You may not realize this, but just because we went to a bowl game this year, it doesn't mean that the leadership at State is doing a good job. It isn't about the daffodils anymore, it is about a university president who wants to control everything and is driving competent people away. At least he's had the good sense not to try to rewrite Croom's playbook. And I'd like to see him TRY to tell Ron Polk what to do...LOL!
"Any good leader gets into the micro-details."
Give me a break! Where did you get this from, the Little Red Book? A true leader knows when to delegate. He knows when to handle an issue personally and when to step back and let people do their damn jobs.
"For far too long, much of the staff and faculty at State have had the mindset of a typical federal or state employee....doing the bare minimum to get by. Doc is holding people accountable, and this upsets the people who need to get their act together. "
Again, when were you on campus for something other than a sporting event? I don't know when you graduated, but when I was there, not so long ago, faculty and staff worked hard to make MSU a great school. It's one thing to weed out useless people, it's another thing to drive off good people who care about students and want to do their jobs right. Even if you don't care at all about the flowers, you should care that this man is wasting your donations or your child's tuition on $100 herbicides for no reason other than that he just doesn't like the way the daffodils look.
This issue is a tempest in a teapot because Doc made it one. He could have ignored the emails if he didn't feel he had to justify himself. Instead he responded in a sarcastic, nasty way. I respect our veterans as much as anyone, however, Fogelsong's military background does not render him sacrosanct.
I wonder how many Ole Miss alumni are chuckling to themselves over the way MSU is being turned upside down. Don't laugh, Rebels - if Khayat retires, the College Board won't hesitate to use their top-secret selection process to find his replacement. And then YOU might end up with someone who wants to raze the Grove because he thinks it's an "eyesore."

My family represents four generations of MSU alumni or current students. I guess I was spoiled by Presidents such as Dr. Giles and Dr. Zacharias that quietly and effectively, and with much humility, handled the job of president of MSU. They hired competent faculty and staff and got out of their way and let them do their jobs. Neither felt the need to have a shrine built in their honor in the library. Neither felt the need to draw attention to themselves by flying over the football stadium. I don't remember them ever berating a student for asking for something as simple as lighting outside a building. The next president at MSU is going to have to do some serious fence mending with alumni and donors.

Well, one of the first things Doc did when he came to MSU was very handily shut down public access to Morrill Road, effectively removing an entrance/exit from campus. He said it was because he wanted to protect Kibler's kids from being run over while playing. Meanwhile, there is a very expensive wrought iron fence around the entire backyard of Kibler's house...about a good acre or so fenced in. So, if the kids have a safe, fenced-in play area why shut off a way to enter/exit campus? Because Doc didn't like the traffic and headlights passing by his house at night. Good one Doc. But this first move as president is very indicative of Doc's style....he doesn't reach out--he builds walls and alienates people.
What really gets me about the whole thing is Doc got caught very clearly in the wrong. Normally, a man of his stature and position could admit if they were wrong. What scares me is Doc can't even admit wrong on this one small issue....I wonder what would happen, say, if a rape were covered up on campus?
This administration knows one thing....damage control. Doc has destroyed many relationships with normal rank and file alumni of our school. Those million dollar donations put names on buildings, but it's the little $200 and $1,000 donations from average alumni that keep the lights on. I just hope the bridges Doc has burned with alumni can be rebuilt.
Pretty green grass may make the place look good, but it doesn't sweeten my degree any. I don't know anyone that has gotten a job by saying "oh hey, my campus has beautiful landscaping."

It's certainly not about the daffodils. It's just like when I tried to get a light turned on outside of Allen Hall. A MSU policeman told me to contact the President's Office to make the request. The first email I sent basically brushed me off and said they would check into it. Still after NO light, I sent another email. I went on to explain that my class was made up of ALL females, including the professor and when we walked out, it was very dark and one of us fell off the ramp because we could not see. I received a response within 15 min. It was very crude and demeaning. He told me that until I have to call a parent and let them know that their child will not be coming home, then I don't need to question his concern for students' safety (in the context that he was a General).
Yes, you heard me. That is only part of what he said. The other part was how I should apply for his job since I think I can do a better job. What kind of president replies to a student in that manner who is truly concerned about their personal safety? And let's not forget that this was right after the rapes that had occurred on this very campus.
Someone should tell me why I should feel safe in the dark? Do you think that my husband or my parents want to get a phone call telling them that something has happened to his wife or their daughter? No. All Dr. Foglesong had to do was have the light cut on, but he REFUSED. He still refuses.
By his reply, and not having a light cut on, tells me and EVERYONE else on this campus that he doesn't care one bit about our personal safety. I really don't think that burning 1 light bulb cost the university that much money. Not even comparable to what it cost to kill the daffodils or have him fly over the stadium, or the many other ridiculous things he has done (the gallons of brown paint).
Once again, it has nothing to do with the uprooting and killing of the flowers. It has EVERYTHING to do with MSU having a president that responds to students, parents, alumni, faculty and staff in a dismissive and rude manner. Or, how about how he showed up late to a black tie affair welcoming the new tenure track professors in his jeans, t-shirt and his motorcycle helmet. I guess the Sturgis bike rally was more important. Or how about how he just didn't show up to a luncheon for the presidents of campus organizations in which he hosted and was the guest speaker.
So, Dennis, Ash, Don and Jim...get a grip and realize that it's not about the flowers. It's everything about how Dr. Foglesong represents this university. We are not the military. We are a university. I think we should have the proper representation.
And Steven, the problem is that Dr. Foglesong doesn't think he was wrong! It's the characteristic of a narcissistic person.

Maybe next time someone falls they should sue the school. I fell down a large staircase on campus, in the rain one day recently, when I got off work. I fell because there were no lights and I couldn't see the individual steps. I was holding the hand rail, so it wasn't as bad as it could have been. If I had been hurt, I would have definitely consulted my attorney. As it was I got a bruised bum and ego, and let it go.
And has Doc forgotten about the recent rape on campus. How is having all the lights off "safe" for our students? You can call campus police for an escort, but you have to have a phone to do that, (yes it is hard to believe but there are still some people without cell phones) after 5 it is hard to find an administrative office that is unlocked that you can call from.

As an alumni AND the mother of the student that received the rude and inappropriate email from the president of our university, I replied to Dr. Fogglesong concerning my daughters safety, only to be ignored. The second time - I sent him an email and copied a few important people on campus giving him the benefit of the doubt that he might not have seen my email. The reply I received was harsher than the one he sent my daughter! As I was not obliged to "fall into rank" I chose to send an email to the Commissioner of the Institute of Higher Learning, the Legal Adviser for the University, the Executive Director of the Alumni Association and many others including the Reflector. This email showed the correspondence we sent along with his responses. I received an immediate reply from Dr. Abraham assuring me that my daughters safety was of utmost important to Mississippi State. The next day, I received an email from Dr. Meredith stating that the IHL board would look into the mater.
What did all this accomplish? At the time I thought 'not much.' But as this problem continues to grow like a cancer at our university, I can only hope that my efforts were duly noted as strike one.

If I wasn't graduating in May, I'd transfer just for the principle of the matter. Doc Foglesong is a tyrant, and all his rude e-mails are doing nothing but getting bad publicity for the school.

This is simply one more example of "Doc" ruling with an iron fist. And Felder nailed it when he stated that this is only the tangable side of a larger issue. Hopefully individuals will pressure their legislators to cut funding if something is not done about the presidency at MSU.

The comments on Felder Rushing's own garden are inappropriate. I have seen many pictures of it and I, and many others find it beautiful. To the more important subject, disingenuous and conflicting responses by both the president and the facilities management personnel bother me greatly, and the notion that the university would not consult its own horticultural department on the subject of the daffodils indicates to me how unimportant the present administration views this field to be.

I find it interesting that Fogglesong keeps making the comment that 'if you think you could do a better job you should have applied for his position' or words to that effect.
In fact quite a few very qualified people applied (including--horrors--people who actually understand how universities function). What people don't know (due to the secret process the head of IHL insisted on) is that Fogglesong's name wasn't placed on the search committee's short list of candidates for the position. But his name mysteriously reappeared as the 'preferred candidate' and he was subsequently coronated (oops, I mean appointed) to the position. Hmmmmm......how'd that happen???

John K. Bettersworth wrote a history of MSU entitled "The People's University". Why have we the alumni, faculty, staff, and student's allowed one administrator turn MSU into his personal fiefdom? I say it's time for the "People" to reclaim our University.

Yes, I agree--the root of the problem is the IHL. By taking faculty and students out of the selection process and importing a general with no experience in university administration onto the list, the IHL manifested a breathtaking disdain for academia and academics. The IHL is effectively saying, "Let's take education out of the hands of the educators, because they're the last people we trust to know anything." So why should it be a surprise when a general wants to run the university like a military base? To a hammer, every problem looks like a nail.... Foglesong needs to go, but to really solve the problem we need to restaff the IHL with people who don't hold educators in contempt.

The IHL's attitude reflects that of the state in general. The comments on the C-L and other articles are very telling. They're generally along the lines of "Huh huh, go Doc, show them eggheads who's REALLY boss!" There's a general disdain for academia - people assume that the faculty and staff are lazy and just don't like to work.
I think this is reflective of Mississippi's attitude towards education and "book larnin'". Before anyone bites my head off, I'm a Mississippi native (and politically conservative, not that that should matter)...but my point is, higher education and educators are not valued in this state. Practical experience is indeed an excellent teacher - however, formal education needs to be respected as well. Having a Ph.D. does NOT make you a better or more valuable human being (I can't stress that enough), but I feel like the general public doesn't realize the amount of work it takes to get a Ph.D., let alone attain a tenured position at a university. If we are ever going to get out of 50th place in this state, we need to ditch this attitude of "people with Ph.D.s are useless and don't know anything of practical value." It's this anti-academic attitude that has some people thinking that Doc can do no wrong. To them, he's just putting the eggheads in their place. (Kind of ironic for someone who has a Ph.D. in chemical engineering and is nicknamed "Doc.")
Some will argue that we haven't seen a mass exodus of faculty from MSU, therefore Doc must be doing his job right. I'd argue that faculty want to ride the storm out because they genuinely care about students. Yes, there are apathetic faculty who are just coating along, just like at any school. But what made my MSU education excellent were the many professors who cared about my learning. They are the ones who are feeling the pinch of these policies, and I've talked to them about it, so this isn't just hearsay. I predict that we will see more of the good ones who can find jobs elsewhere leaving MSU. The last thing Mississippi needs is to increase "brain drain!" The ones who stay will be the least-qualified faculty who will take their frustrations out on the students, and MSU will suffer as a result.
Carmon and Mom, please, PLEASE write a letter to the C-L for the sake of those who get all their news from the propaganda pieces the President's office puts out. This callous disregard for student safety will not be taken seriously unless the good people of this state see it in print!

I would like the President Foglesong to read the poem by William Wordsworth to possibly begin to appreciate the beauty of the daffodil. We Mississippians LOVE them, just drive through any Mississippi neighborhoods now.
I also request that he leave the decisions about horticulture to the horticulturists at State. He may even begin to appreciate what is there. I have heard recommendations that when a homeowner moves to a new house that they wait for all 4 seasons before making big changes in the new yard, ie view all the seasons of all the plants. I think there is certainly some value to this plan.
I wandered lonely as a cloud
I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o'er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden daffodils,
Beside the lake, beneath the trees
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.
Continuous as the stars that shine
And twinkle on the Milky Way,
They stretched in never-ending line
Along the margin of a bay:
Ten thousand saw I at a glance
Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.
The waves beside them danced, but they
Out-did the sparkling waves in glee: -
A poet could not but be gay
In such a jocund company:
I gazed -and gazed -but little thought
What wealth the show to me had brought.
For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills
And dances with the daffodils.

Aviscanticus: a sonnet
Presidents of colleges, and kings
Alike complain that those they rule above,
Despite their god-like vision in all things,
Do not reward their labors with their love.
And thus found Aviscanticus, the Proud,
A general who of counsel had no need,
A caesar who to wisdom never bowed,
A leader who had never learned to lead.
He snubbed the senate as irrelevant;
He silenced opposition with a frown;
He banned the art he found inelegant;
He ordered pipes and concrete painted brown.
And still he seemed to win the war of wills,
Until he dared to pluck the daffodils.

He is the cause for all the parking problems on campus, studentd having to park 3 miles from the stadium on game days and many other problems this school faces. Fogelsong does all this and yet won't even reply to a email from a student. Fogelsong is a joke and I would love to see him gone and State hire a new President. If Fogelsong stays at this university we will start having drill practice before football gamest instead of tailgaiting. I am very disappointed the direction the University is going with privatized food and more staff parking then student parking. Fogelsong needs to go

Why is our new VP for finance even quoting anything about daffodils? I hope he knows more about MSU's finances than he does about horticulture.

This piece of PR garbage is meant for people who are not on campus seeing things with their own eyes. There were many daffodils that were not dug up, but weed-eated so they would not bloom, the ones in front of the Chapel and also Magruder were axe murdered, and I am sure there are other places where this was done besides these two. Some were also sprayed with weed killer that cost $100 a bottle (Image is the brand name).
This is about more than just flowers, paint, and campus aesthetics, it is about a president who doesn't practice what he preaches (ie. be a team player), who preaches leadership, but doesn't know what the word means, (he obviously thinks a leader is a dictator), and is trying to run a university like a military base.
Please read this article and look at the scary similarities.
