Great article, and thanks to the Reflector for getting it out there. A couple small points though. Wine isn't capped at 10% here in MS which could be inferred from the piece. Also, Free The Hops does in fact have a lobbyist, and we will as well this year.
For everyone out there interested in having access to craft beer, or in consumer choice, or just getting the government out of our lives and letting individuals make decisions for themselves, check us out on Facebook and join the cause.

It's fixed in the headline...but still misspelled in the poll.

True. I thought you meant that it was misspelled on the front page of the actual paper.

How about the "Former Alumnus." How does that work? Is this person not an alumnus anymore?

The State makes more money on low alcohol content beer across the board. You have to buy more to catch the same buzz on higher alcohol content. That could be one of the contributing factors to Mississippi being the fattest State in the nation! Perhaps the lobbyist for this beer alcohol content cause could work that into the argument. Raising the alcohol content in beer will decrease the actual calorie consumption thereby reducing the fat beer guts of beer-drinking Mississippians! Then we would have lower health care costs...

I for one am GLAD this law is not passed... I mean, how would the state of MS handle it. They would have to change their stance on drinking and drinving...
THERE IS NO STATE LAW IN MISSISSIPPI THAT BANS DRINKING AND DRIVING - as long as your BAC < 0.08%.
** There are of course county laws **
Unlike most other state, open container laws aren't Mississippi state laws and vary from city to city. Even though they aren't required by federal law, states are encouraged by the federal government to adopt open container laws.
Not only is it open container, but according to the state, the container CAN BE THE DRIVERS - Not just the passenger.
Best I could find was a 2007 ref. to this law.
This is why the rest of the country thinks we are a backwater regressive head up our a** state. We get all up in arms over the % content of our beer, but can't even get a state law that bans drinking and driving.
I don't think the legislature is against this law, I think they have no idea how to change it. There still working on a way of reducing the HIGHEST grocery tax in the country with the LOWEST tobacco tax...

Yes! This is what Mississippi needs! MORE ALCOHOL! More broken homes. More addicts (yes, alcohol is a drug). More MSU students in the graveyard! "Mississippi residents will once again be denied beer..." Reads like a hack press release, not a news story. Typical of today's slanted reporting.

Wow look at Mr. Informed. I'm sure that's what every raging alcoholic does...he/she buys a Rochefort 10 at $7.00 a bottle (11.2 oz) and procedes to commit haneous acts of violence. Get off the short bus and start thinking for yourself. I bet you're a party line man, a Sunday Baptist, and a real fun person to be around in general. Georgia's alcohol related incidents acutally dropped slightly after passing their bill raising their alcohol percentage to 14%. I'll just keep putting $2500 into the economies of surrounding states.

Can't debate me on the merits, can't refute anything I wrote, so you attack me personally. Unsophisticated and immature. I wear eyeglasses, so go ahead and call me "Four Eyes," too. You guys really need to grow up.

Do you really think that the alcoholics of Mississippi would be buying expensive gourmet beers with slightly higher alcohol contents?

You obviously haven't spent much time around alcoholics.
