To the Reflector,
From on college newspaper to another, keep on this story and hound for information until it sees the light of day. There are many forms of censorship and this act is just another form of censorship.
A few years ago, your fellow campus, Ole Miss, had the same problem with newspapers disappearing out of their racks and it was basically a form of Nazi censorship.
Keep up the good fight. If those in charge don't like it, FIGHT HARDER, TOUGHER and SMARTER.
They may be able to rob you of your print copies but you have the advantage of being able to reach the masses via the Internet.
Don't let anything hold you back and keep fighting the journalist cause.
Because WE ARE the first draft of history and WE WILL write it in a non-biased form.
WE ARE JOURANLISTS and that's what we do.

Also don't forget guys. The Reflector's policy of "take one but others are required to be paid for." That policy was started when other newspapers came on campus, and was started as a method of preventing removals of papers. THEN there's the Constitution and case law that strongly urges against such Time, Place and Manner (TMP) restrictions. And by urge I mean such acts are considered censorship based on content and are not legal. There is recourse! Not to mention a Mississippi State Supreme Court case that gives complete control of content to students, and as such, allowing for the dissemenation of free ideas not being controlled by the administration.
I hate all this is happening. But if there is a suspicious reason for the papers missing, and if this reason is because of the President's office, then it's a very interesting case study and example of how Freedom of Press continously has to be fought for.

I cannot believe that anyone would think of stealing a large number of newspapers. I mean, it seems very pointless that a person would even think to do that. Maybe there was no malicious intent except for boredom.

Oh there was intent...it is called CENSORSHIP. There have been several articles and editorials written concerning the bad administration of President of the University. Someone wants to keep it from being distributed.

Oh stop blaming Doc for everything! Perhaps it was a some art students who needed newspapers for a project. Or some high school students bored and were looking for something to do. Doc is being blamed for everything and its beginning to get a bit ridiculous. Oh the Nazi! Oh the censorship! Fight Harder and Tougher! There is nothing to fight over! So it was a large amount of newspapers that most likely nothing was going to be done with except thrown away or recycled. People need to stop exaggerating everything so much. Besides if Doc had pulled the newspapers he is outspoken enough that he would have said he had done it!

The issue, "Fed up," isn't that "nothing was going to be done with" the issues. Those issues, while in the racks, are property of The Reflector. Students taking stacks of papers equals theft. Staff members taking stacks equals censorship.
That is the issue, and as of yet, people have not come forward to confirm or deny the reports we've been receiving.

"Fed Up:" wrong. do you actually believe Doc would admit lifting or having someone lift the missing copies of The Reflector?
I'm sure someone who reads these posts knows something about the missing papers. If an MSU employee was ordered to remove stacks of the paper then I ask that they come forward. Sure, it could have been some student and a friend or two having a little "fun."
But, I believe there is much more to this story.
It was interesting to read Doc's "Letter To The Editor" in the Tupelo Daily Journal over the Christmas holidays. And before Christmas, there was a piece by him in the Starkville Daily News.
But why do we not see anything from him in The Reflector. Does he send over stuff? Does he not care? (silly question, right)
That scenario seems doubtful since he started his own little online rag, "Student Express." It's about as exciting as drinking 3 month old milk.blah.

Someone told me he submitted a letter to the Reflector and then pulled it when he insisted that it go on the front page but the editor insisted that it go in the "letters to the editor" section.

Bravo to "The Reflector" Editor!
A letter, even though from the President, should be in the letters section. I'm glad Tyler did not give in to Doc's power play.

I agree with C.J. and C.J. and worked for the same newspaper for a short time so we tend to know what in the world we are talking about when we agree on things.
Taking even more than one paper from the rack is a constution of a theft.
I even bet that the MSU PD or is it community law enforcement agency -- haven't been to campus in a while -- don't remember if they are certified or not -- have they launched an official investigation into the matter?
This is the same as someone entering into someone else's dorm room and making off with their property. It is theft.
If the MSU "whatevers" -- and I saw that politely because I don't know their certification -- haven't launched an investigation, it is time to.
There should be security cameras in all the buildings and most likely they are near the racks because the racks are usually near the doors of the buildings.
A person can be identified off the security camera footage -- and it's public record -- and if MSU won't go after them. The Reflector as an independent body should file charges and plaster a captured image from the security camera on the front page as big as the editor sees fit. Not only try this person(s) in court but also in the court of public opinion.
After reading all that has been involved with this, and talking to a few people in the journalism industry, I have my suspicions on who did the act or was behind it.
I assume he/she wouldn't do the act themselves but would have some low-lackey do the job for them.
It's about time that people that come from certain branches of the government and are used to secrecy learn a little thing about openness and open meetings and how to deal with the press.
As for the "Letter to the Editor" from Doc, I would have done the same thing as Editor of the Reflector would have done. Sorry not even the President of the United States gets front page space for a biased-laiden opinion piece. And if he wants it to be exactly as he typed it and not according to Associated Press style -- he can contact an Ad Rep and by an ad at the highest display price possible for an opiniated-piece.

It was probably a bunch of kids playing a prank get over yourselves and stop blaming the the president of the university. Im sure he has better things to do than to pull some newspaper off the stands that he knows will be up again in less than a week.

Yeah, Doc wouldn't do that - pull stacks of the Reflector out of the racks. He's to busy tidying up campus, pulling up daffodil bulbs (or was it dandelions - he doesn't know the difference), or spouting off on the positive responses on the survey he commissioned (big surprise there), painting fireplugs brown, destroying the crape myrtles at Dudy Noble, etc.

The Reflector is the only media that foglesong can't control, except to have them removed. Everybody else that doesn't sign on to his cult of personality gets marginalized or fired. Meanwhile he continues to hire a cadre of cronies as "presidental assistants" with dubious job responsibilities and six figure salaries. I would definitely not put it past his petty, vengeful, self serving attitude to have had this done. For all of his rhetoric about character and leadership, he is an abysmal failure at both.

He's given the entire campus plenty of reason to believe he's capable of this. So there's no reason he shouldn't have to answer for it.
