I am one of the few registered Republicans in the area... I'm not thrilled with my choices in the primary so I've been talking to a lot of Democrats about the upcoming vote -- and I've personally converted at least 4 Hillary supporters to Obama. A Hillary nomination is almost a guaranteed Republican win in November because she will motivate so many people like myself, who will vote for anyone, and I mean ANYONE, rather than vote for her.
Besides, the president can do almost nothing on his/her own. The only effective president is one who can motivate Congress to act on his agenda (no sexist implications there, I'm just tired of trying to be gender neutral). And if Congress isn't willing to go along, the president needs to motivate the American people to get involved. A president who is unable to inspire and motivate is just another warm body occupying the White House. So who cares who that is.
Obama has consistently demonstrated that he can inspire and motivate. He has convictions and he seems to have principles that he stands behind. I don't agree with a large part of his agenda, but I would rather have a principled man who seems to truly care about the well being of this country and its people in the Oval Office than someone who will say or do anything to get elected, thus proving that sitting in the office is more important than trying to do something good for the country. Everything I have seen from both Clintons leads me to believe that they just want the office.
And Obama impresses me as a leader, not a follower. The Clintons have always impressed me as stick-your-finger-in-the-air-and-see-which-way-the wind-is-blowing-and-that-is-where-we're-going-today politicians. I.e., they're followers, not leaders. I want a leader as president, not a follower.
Enough of my ranting -- I still have 4 more days to convince more Hillary voters to switch to Obama... :-)
