Race and ethnicity issues abound in the College of Architecture, Art and Design gallery in Giles Hall. The exhibit showcases the work of photographers Jim Kuether and David Perkes.
Perkes’s black and white “Redeeming Places: Reusing/Rescuing the Material World” exhibit and Kuether’s color exhibit, “MSinterpretations: Images of Mississippi,” will be on display through March 25.
“This is an interesting exhibit of two artists’ works in similar media and similar subject matter with different aesthetics, one being black and white and the other in color,” said art gallery director Bill Andrews. “I would say one is a romanticized view (Kuether) while the other (Perkes) is more documentary.”
The exhibit was selected by the art department, the University Honors Program and the College of Architecture, Art and Design.
“The exhibit sort of fell into place and was a wonderful, spontaneous occurrence of people working together,” Andrews said.
“It’s just another example of collaboration between different areas of architecture and design and the Honors Program here at MSU,” said art department head Kay Demarche.
“We hope to continue doing this in the future because it benefits the entire university,” Demarche added.
Associate professor and UHP director Nancy McCarley and Andrews will showcase this event.
“We are not only pleased but thrilled to bring this art exhibit to Mississippi State,” McCarley said.
Andrews said he thinks gallery visitors will enjoy the exhibit whether they observe the Southern subjects of Perkes or the unfamiliar subjects of Kuether.
    The gallery hours are Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m.
